» The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village Site Hosts British Archeology Students and Faculty

Meet the Team
Some of the archeology work takes place in the laboratory in the archeodome. Some takes place at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Other work is done by specialists from across the country and around the world. The principal archeologists at Augustana College and for the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village are Dr. Adrien Hannus and Peter Winham.

Research
A key component of the work at the Indian Village is scientific research. The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is a National Register and National Historic Landmark property. The Thomsen Center Archeodome provides an enclosed archeological teaching and research facility—one of very few such facilities in North America.

Sample Discoveries
The archeology team has uncovered many exciting discoveries. Photographs of some of these discoveries are included on this website.

Site Overview
The Indian Village is a prehistoric archeological site that also includes a museum and archeodome. On you way to the archeodome you will be in the village itself. Rock art incised stones which you can make rubbings with line the pathway, while other rock art adorns the walls and interior of the archeodome. Make sure to look for these.

Excavation Activities
Archeology is a very labor-intensive profession. At a site like Mitchell, a few weeks excavation can produce so many artifacts that several months of analysis are needed to interpret and write up the results of that work. Much of this archeological activity happens behind the scenes—sorting, cataloging and analyzing the materials that are recovered. Some of the Mitchell Indian Village work goes on in the laboratory in the archeodome. Some takes place at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Other work is done by specialists from across the country and around the world.

Educational Curriculum
The Indian Village has developed educational curriculum that can be used in various classroom settings for grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. This curriculum is available for use by educators at no charge. Each of the curriculum sets can be viewed on the website and can be downloaded onto your computer.
